What the origin label covers
A name page shows an origin only when it names a language. Across the dataset, 14,302 of 19,763 records carry a placeholder origin ("English" or "Muslim") instead of a language, so lists built on origin are small. This guide shows what we can support for four origins and where the data stops.
| Origin label | Names | With a documented meaning | Boys | Girls | Listed by SSA in 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Irish | 59 | 21 | 35 | 24 | 59 |
| Italian | 46 | 8 | 25 | 21 | 46 |
| French | 66 | 16 | 15 | 51 | 66 |
| Ancient Greek | 149 | 63 | 56 | 93 | 149 |
A name counts once per list; a name recorded for both genders counts in both the Boys and Girls columns. The label is the origin recorded in the dataset, which is one source’s opinion, not a verified etymology.

Counts are Social Security card applications for births in the United States; names with fewer than 5 births in a year are not listed, and spelling variants are counted separately. Meanings, origins and genders are as recorded in this site's dataset: Wiktionary contributors (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the MuslimNames.com dataset (CC0). Each is one documented sense, not a full etymology.
A name is counted in a column when its recorded origin is that label, and the label is a single source's tag, not a verified etymology. Greek appears as Ancient Greek in our data.

How to use an origin label
- Treat it as a lead. The label tells you what one source recorded. If heritage matters, confirm it with a reference or family source.
- Read the meaning, not just the origin. Many names have more than one documented sense, and the table shows one.
- Expect gaps. Names missing from these lists are not necessarily from another origin. They may simply have no origin recorded.
- Check the rank. The tables are ordered by SSA rank, so you can see which names a family will have heard and which are rare.
The baby name generator can filter by origin, and the names hub lists every family we cover.
