Match the style, not the sound
Sibling names work when they feel like they belong to one family without sounding like one name said twice. That is mostly about sound: how names begin, end and scan. The most popular names show how crowded some sound patterns are.
Endings
Many popular names end on the same few letters, which can make sibling names echo each other without anyone planning it:
| Final letter | Names | Share |
|---|---|---|
| A | 35 | 35.0% |
| E | 20 | 20.0% |
| Y | 18 | 18.0% |
| N | 10 | 10.0% |
| H | 6 | 6.0% |
| I | 2 | 2.0% |

If two sibling names share a final sound, say them in a row. Calling them across a yard will be the real test.

A set of names that are all the same length can sound like a list. Mixing lengths avoids that.
A checklist
- Say them together, in birth order and in reverse, with the surname.
- Check the initials. Say whether you want matching or different first letters, and decide on purpose.
- Check the nicknames. Short forms can end up closer than the full names.
- Compare popularity. The ranks are on each name's page. Decide whether you are comfortable with a very common name beside a very rare one.
- Keep a shared thread loose. A theme, such as meaning or origin, is easier to carry if it is not the only rule.
Tools
The sibling name generator suggests names matched to your children's names on sound, origin and meaning theme, and says which it matched on, and the name combiner blends two names into candidates.
